In 1758 powers were granted to make the River Calder navigable upstream from Wakefield. after much opposition the whole 24 mile stretch to Sowerby Bridge was opened in 1770.

The Calder & Hebble Navigation is the gateway to the Pennines and links the Aire & Calder Navigation to the start of the Rochdale Canal. Midway, at Cooper Bridge, it meets the start of the Huddersfield Broad Canal.

During 1828 the Halifax branch of the Navigation was opened.

The Calder & Hebble Navigation Warehouse fronts the River Calder. Built in 1790, and subsequently altered in 1810, as a grain and storage depot.

The Rutland Mills complex was built in 1875 as a woollen mill. Small business units are now housed at the site.

HRH The Prince of Wales visited Wakefield Waterfront in April 1999.
