WAKEFIELD WATERFRONT GALLERY Six practices have now been selected for the shortlist in a competition to design a prestigious and distinctive "landmark" gallery on the waterfront in Wakefield. The new gallery will house displays of the City's impressive fine art collection, the proposed gift of 30 original plaster sculptures by Dame Barbara Hepworth, which have been offered to the city by the Hepworth Estate, and an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions and events. The new facility will form a physical and spiritual focus for the creative arts within the District and a centre for education, lifelong learning and appreciation of the creative life of the City and District. The objective of the competition will be to identify and secure an architectural practice that will produce an exceptionally high quality and inspiring building which will become synonymous with the City of Wakefield. The winning practice will be selected in October following presentations of initial design proposals by each short-listed team.
